What is The Chief Good of Your Business?
The idea of the chief good (summum bonum) comes to us from Aristotle who held that happiness (eudaimonia) is the chief good—something we desire for its own sake, the ultimate goal of existence. As a company we strive to help you identify and achieve your chief good.
Not Just One Bottom Line
A conscious business seeks to promote the intelligent pursuit of happiness in all its stakeholders. It produces sustainable, exceptional performance through the solidarity of its community and the dignity of each member.
~Fred Kofman, Conscious Business
A conscious business is one that is led by an individual or team that pays attention to a quadruple bottom line—purpose, people, profits, and planet.
Many people are familiar with the concept of a triple bottom line—profits, people, and planet (or economic, social, and environmental) but we have added “purpose” to hold space for your entrepreneurial vision and the passion you bring to your products and services. We agree with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of Good Business, when he writes, “fundamentally, business exists to enhance human well-being.” That’s our purpose as business leaders, entrepreneurs, CEOs, and employees—to bring happiness to ourselves and the world. Conscious business leaders pay attention to the way in which their business affects themselves, their employees, their suppliers and vendors, the community, and the world.
The Business of Happiness
We like the definition by Fred Kofman, author of Conscious Business, who writes, “A conscious business seeks to promote the intelligent pursuit of happiness in all its stakeholders. It produces sustainable, exceptional performance through the solidarity of its community and the dignity of each member.”
Conscious business requires a balance of our physical energy (actions) and psychic energy (attention) to reduce suffering and enhance well-being for ourselves and others. It’s not a dour exercise in self sacrifice. Rather, it’s about finding our highest purpose, breathing life into it, and making it real in the world in an enjoyable way.
